Newport, New York
Newport is the name of a town and village in Herkimer County, New York. The village is inside the town. , the town population was estimated at 2,400 and the village population was estimated at 650. The town is considered part of the Mohawk Valley region and is located approximately seventeen miles north-east of the City of Utica. The town encompasses several hamlets and villages. The hamlets are Farrel Corner, Irish Settlement and Old City. The villages are Newport, and part of Middleville and a part of Poland. The other part of Middleville is in the neighboring Town of Fairfield. The other part of Poland is in the neighboring town of Russia.

Most Newport traffic tickets originate on the town’s arterial road, New York State Route 28 (NYS-28). The road follows the West Canada Creek downstream, heading north-west and south-east. The creek splits the town in two. NYS-28 is the largest road in the town’s eastern half. On the opposite side of the creek runs County Route 200 (Old State Road), which is the largest road in the town’s western half. Both roads run through Newport Village. NYS-28 is the village’s main road. A small portion of NYS-28 passes by the western half of Middleville in the town’s southern area. It meets with County Route 58 (Summit Road), which in turn connects to County Route 200 in the town’s mid-section. The remaining western part of town consists of small local roads. These roads lead back to County Route 200.
