Whitehall, New York

Whitehall is the name of a town and village in Washington County, New York. The village is inside the town. Whitehall is roughly eighty miles north of Albany, near the Vermont State line. The southern tip of Lake Champlain forms the town’s western boundary. The town makes up approximately sixty square miles and is home to around 3,900 residents ().

In 1960, the State of New York declared Whitehall as the birthplace of the United States Navy. During the American Revolutionary War, American forces captured the British controlled village known as Skenesborough. They used this location to build the first set of ships that would fight off the invading British Navy. To this day, there are numerous historic sites and structures throughout the village.

Traffic Tickets in Whitehall

The town’s main road is US-Route 4. It enters from the southwest, originating in East Greenbush, near Albany. It also enters from the northeast via Vermont. Both portions of this road meet in the village of Whitehall, found in the northern part of town. Several roads intersect US-4 as it passes through the town, including New York State Route 22 (NYS-22), County Route 12 (CR-12), County Route 18 (CR-18), and County Route 21 (CR-21). These roads serve the rural south-eastern area of town. CR-12 is the largest of the three. It heads north-south through the town’s mid-section. The town lacks a dedicated police force. The New York State Police and the Washington County Sheriff’s Office take its place. Troopers and deputies routinely conduct traffic and safety patrols. They issue citations for various moving violations. The village has its own small police force that conducts traffic stops in the village. All town and village tickets are made answerable to the Whitehall Town Court (Town of Whitehall Justice Court).
