Traffic Tickets in Columbia County
Columbia County’s busiest courts are found along the Taconic State Parkway. As it is a “parkway” the speed limit cannot exceed 55 miles per hour. Since most other highways have a 65 mph speed limit, motorists often do not adjust properly. A very high number of speeding tickets are issued daily on the Taconic for motorists clocked in the 75-85 mph range.
Another highway in Columbia County is Interstate 90 (New York State Thruway). The I-90 runs northeast and southwest across the northern part of the county. Taking it northbound will bring you to Albany. Taking it southbound will bring you to Springfield, Massachusetts. The interstate is patrolled by the New York State Police. The speed limit on I-90 is 65 miles per hour. Other noteworthy roadways in Columbia County include New York State Route 22 (NYS-22) and US Route 9 (US-9). The US-9 runs north and south through the county’s mid-section, and continues into the neighboring counties. NYS-22 runs north and south as well, along the northeast town line.
The local roads are monitored by local police departments. If there is no police department present, the Columbia County Sheriff’s Department provides law enforcement services. They issue tickets made answerable to many courts, just like the state police. The court you must submit your plea to will be listed on the ticket.
